A Matter of Principle? Modern Approaches to Professional Regulation

Developments in the world of Professional Regulation continue apace. In this, our third annual workshop in Edinburgh, we stand back from the fray and take stock of what professional regulation means in 2008 and beyond. We focus on the question of what is effective regulation, drawing on current thinking and experiences. Our keynote speakers will stimulate this debate from the perspective of the financial services and medical sectors. Discussion will focus on the current trend towards a 'solutions-driven' or 'principles-based' approach.
We will also hear from members of Shepherd and Wedderburn's Professional Regulation Group, with an update on the European Services Directive and its impact on the regulation of professionals. Additionally we will address the latest judicial developments, providing an update on the courts' approach to issues in the modern regulatory world.
