Shepherd and Wedderburn's marketing class of 2004
- Strathclyde University launches marketing course for law firm's staff
Strathclyde University has created an innovative new Certificate of Professional Development course in marketing and business development specifically geared towards the needs of leading law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn.
A pilot group of 15 volunteer PAs and senior secretaries from the firm's Glasgow and Edinburgh offices started studying for the new certificate last week and is due to complete it by the end of the year. Designed to provide them with a level of practical marketing and business development knowledge and skills appropriate for their role, the 15-module course outline was created in conjunction with the firm's marketing team. It covers topics such as client management, marketing information, database management, seminar and event management, market research, communication skills and business improvement.
Elaine Collinson, Manager of Scottish Management Projects at Strathclyde University commented: "Marketing is a key area for the legal sector. Traditionally, this sector has relied on word of mouth or referral for its business. Increasingly, the more progressive law firms are operating from a marketing orientation and adopting a very proactive approach to their market place.
This proactive approach is clearly evident at Shepherd and Wedderburn, winners of the Scottish Marketing Awards' Grand Prix prize in 2002. Their commitment to marketing is exemplified in this new course in Business Development through Managing Customer Relationships, which we are delighted to be delivering. The course was specifically designed to suit the firm's needs and demonstrates its understanding of the fact that marketing is important to everyone in the organisation and all employees have a role to play in the firm's success.
At a personal level, Shepherd and Wedderburn's commitment to its staff is evident since this course will add value to their own portfolio of skills and experience."
Carole Ritchie, HR Director at Shepherd and Wedderburn, commented: "As a firm we are committed to developing all staff to their full potential - ultimately such development enhances the quality of service we offer to our clients. We are delighted that this externally accredited course offers some of our secretarial staff the opportunity to develop new skills and behaviours in a business-relevant context.'"
