Shepherd and Wedderburn gives £5,000 to support Special Olympics
Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has become one of the first companies to make a donation to the Special Olympics Great Britain Games, which are being held in Scotland for the first time this July. The firm has donated £5,000.
Patrick Andrews, chief executive, Shepherd and Wedderburn, said: "We are very pleased to make a donation to such a worthy cause. The Great Britain Games will be one of the largest sporting events taking place this year, and we applaud the dedication and commitment of all the athletes taking part."
Gordon McCormack, Games Director, Special Olympics Great Britain Games, said: "The Games are set to be a great success and I can't wait to see the first athletes getting into the starting blocks. We are very grateful to Shepherd and Wedderburn for their generosity. We have had an excellent response from companies the length and breadth of Scotland, but of course we need more! We need every penny so we are asking members of the public to also give generously to support the Games."
Nineteen teams from throughout Great Britain will take part in the Great Britain Games, with eight teams from Scotland, one from Wales and ten from England. As well as 2,500 athletes and coaches, around 3,000 parents, carers, supporters and friends from the nineteen regions of the UK are expected to visit Glasgow in July.
You can support the Special Olympics by making a donation to help thousands of athletes with a learning disability. Call the Special Olympics 2005 Hotline on 0845 272 0007 or visit www.specialolympicsglasgow.com
Notes to Editors
The Special Olympics is an international organisation celebrating ability and amateur athleticism. Founded in 1968, the Special Olympics worldwide organisation is now active in 151 member countries with more than one million athletes worldwide.
The ethos of the organisation is that anyone, with encouragement, support and access to resources, can be provided with a positive sporting experience and improved self-esteem. Special Olympics seeks to focus on a person's ability, giving them the opportunity to develop and to achieve their goals.
Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB), established in 1978, reaches out to the 1.2 million people in the UK with a learning disability. The organisation enables people with a learning disability to acquire through sport, the confidence, social and life skills that help their inclusion in society.
At least 12 million people in Britain are touched by a learning disability, considering that the families, teachers and friends are also affected. SOGB has ambitious growth targets – the goal is to include 5,000 more athletes with a learning disability by the end of 2005.
Special Olympics is the only organisation authorised by the International Olympic Committee to use the word 'Olympics' in its title.
Coca-Cola Great Britain is the official soft drink supplier for the Special Olympics National Summer Games 2005 and is proud to have supported Special Olympics Great Britain since its establishment in 1978.
