Law firm’s donation helps Special Olympics GB Games take home the gold

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn demonstrated its support for Glasgow’s Special Olympics Great Britain Games this month with a £5,000 donation to the successful event.

The Games, which were hosted in a range of venues across Glasgow, attracted nineteen teams of men and women with special needs from across the UK. The event sought to demonstrate that anyone, with encouragement, support and access to resources, can be provided with a positive sporting experience and improved self-esteem.

Over 2,500 athletes took part in the week long event which attracted thousands of spectators and sponsorship from companies across Scotland.

Liz McRobb, partner in Shepherd and Wedderburn's Glasgow office, who presented the medals for the athletics competition said: “We were delighted to support such a worthwhile cause. The Great Britain Games is one of the largest sporting events taking place in the UK this year and we applaud the dedication and commitment of the athletes taking part.”

“Shepherd and Wedderburn takes an active role in helping businesses and communities adapt to the needs of people with disabilities. We believe that our commitment to the Special Olympics and our work with Capability Scotland over the past few years is important in helping society to tackle, and adapt appropriately to, the challenges faced by those with special needs.
Gordon McCormack, Games Director, Special Olympics Great Britain Games, said: “The Games were a great success. We are incredibly proud to have organised such an exciting event and we are very grateful to Shepherd and Wedderburn and other donors for making the event possible”. McCormack added that the success of the Special Olympics will bode well for Glasgow’s bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2014.
The seventh Special Olympics launched with music from SambaYaBamba, Robert Post, Lucie Silvas and headline act Texas and finished spectacularly with an enormous fireworks display, lighting up the Glasgow skyline.

The nineteen teams taking part in the Games included eight teams from Scotland, one from Wales and ten from England. In addition to the 2,500 athletes, around 3,000 parents, carers, supporters and friends from the nineteen regions of the UK attended the event.
