Shepherd and Wedderburn enhances corporate offering in London
Steven Turnbull, one of Linklaters' senior corporate partners, is joining the London office of leading UK firm Shepherd and Wedderburn as a corporate partner on 12 May 2008. Steven is 55 and will be leaving Linklaters after 32 years with the firm, of which 23 has been as a partner in the Corporate Department.
One of the City's best-known corporate lawyers, Steven is "recommended" by PLC Which Lawyer? for Corporate, M&A and Corporate Governance. Over his career at Linklaters, Steven has been responsible for a number of important Linklaters' clients including ARM Holdings, Electra Private Equity, Flemings, MEPC, Orange and Siebe/Invensys.
In addition to his role as a corporate partner at Shepherd and Wedderburn, Steven will be responsible for the development of Knowledge Management within the firm. Steven has been closely involved in the development of Linklaters' world-class Knowledge Management capability for over 20 years. He has been responsible for Knowledge Management within Linklaters' Corporate Department since 1986 and he chaired the firm's Knowledge Council from 2003 until 2007. Steven also sits on the influential Company Law Committee of The Law Society of England and Wales, and will continue to do so.
Since Shepherd and Wedderburn opened its London office in 2000, it has grown considerably. The corporate team has acted in over 60 IPOs or secondary issues of listed securities in the last three years and its corporate finance deal value for 2007 totalled over £18.7 billion. The firm won corporate team of the year in the 2008 Scottish Legal Awards. Hemscott ranks the firm in the law firm categories 11th by FTSE 250 listed clients and 10th by Smallcap/fledging listed clients.
Linklaters and Shepherd and Wedderburn have had a close working relationship for many years. Recent collaborations include the £11.6 billion take-over of Scottish Power by Iberdrola and the £595 million acquisition of Whyte and Mackay by United Spirits. A number of Linklaters' alumni are partners in Shepherd and Wedderburn, both in London and in Scotland.
Linklaters' Senior Partner David Cheyne, said: "We would like to thank Steven for the huge contribution he has made to Linklaters over the years. We are pleased that he is joining Shepherd and Wedderburn for the next stage of his career – they are good friends of ours and we know many of their partners well. Steven will be an excellent addition to their London operation and I am sure that his appointment will significantly increase the number of opportunities for the two firms to work together".
Shepherd and Wedderburn Chief Executive Patrick Andrews said: "We are delighted that Steven has chosen to join Shepherd and Wedderburn. He has an outstanding reputation in the market as a corporate lawyer and will be of enormous help to us as we continue to grow our business in London. In addition, Steven's appointment represents a unique opportunity for us to take our existing well-regarded Knowledge Management capability to the forefront of that offered by UK law firms, delivering tangible efficiencies and benefits for both us and our clients."
Steven Turnbull said "I have hugely enjoyed my time at Linklaters and feel enormously proud to have played a part in the significant achievements of the firm – in particular its development since the late 90s into a truly global law firm. However, after over 30 years with Linklaters, I am keen to embark on a new challenge. Shepherd and Wedderburn is a firm I know well and I have always been very impressed by their reputation, people and uncompromising approach to quality. I am very much looking forward to joining them at what is a very exciting time in their development."
