Powering ahead with huge renewable energy deal

Leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has advised ScottishPower on one of the largest power purchase agreements this year.

The energy giant signed the 20-year deal to take power generated in the UK by Iberdrola Renovables' windfarm portfolio.  The portfolio's generating capacity consists of 400MW, which could increase to around 6,000MW by the end of the PPA in 2027.

Graeme Moffett, a senior associate, who was seconded to ScottishPower earlier this year, worked with the company to close the deal as part of a tight timetable leading up to the initial public offering of Iberdrola Renovables this quarter.

He said: "This is one of the largest Power Purchase Agreements in terms of capacity in the UK this year, and involves an extensive portfolio of windfarms across the UK owned by Iberdrola Renovables.

"Shepherd and Wedderburn has a market-leading energy practice and this deal is the latest string to add to our bow."

Other renewable energy deals Shepherd and Wedderburn has advised on this year include:

  • Acting for ScottishPower/CRE Energy Ltd in respect of Europe's largest consented onshore windfarm at Whitelee, south of Glasgow
  • Advising and appearing as advocate for Airtricity at the public inquiry in respect of a new windfarm development at St John's Hill, near Stonehaven for which consent was granted within two months from the close of the inquiry
  • Advising I&H Brown Ltd at public inquiries for a planning application for the Toddleburn Windfarm and the Section 36 application for the Calliachar Windfarm
  • Secondment of Sandra Leece to Meridian Energy Limited in New Zealand, NZ's largest electricity generator, certified as carbon neutral and generating solely from renewable sources.
