Aberdeen Safety Seminar to Protect Oil Workers

Keeping British oil workers safe in the dangerous Niger Delta region is the subject of a high-powered seminar in Aberdeen next week. (25 July).

A recent wave of kidnappings forced the Foreign Office to advise individuals and companies to leave the Bayelsa, Delta and Rivers States in oil-rich but trouble-torn Nigeria.

More than 180 foreign workers, including 33 Britons, have been snatched in the Delta area since January last year.

But now leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn’s Aberdeen office has joined forces with UK West Africa Action Group (WAAG) and the international security risk mitigation company, AKE Ltd, to offer advice on how to lower the legal and security risks.

The event, for WAAG members, will focus on the increasing dangers to smaller companies operating in the Niger Delta and how to reduce the risk.

Leon Moller, a West African lawyer and Aberdeen-based energy expert with Shepherd and Wedderburn said:  “Knowledge is a powerful tool and accurate intelligence is the necessary foundation for risk mitigation and sound planning.  This event will give those attending a deeper understanding of the legal and security risks involved, enabling safe and profitable operations.”

The ‘Lunch & Learn’ session on Understanding Risk: Legal and Security Issues in West Africa, will be held at Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, Greenhole Place, Bridge of Don, Aberdeen, between 11.00 am and 1.00 pm on Wednesday, 25 July 2007.
