Scepticism and Competition Policy
Jeremy Peat, Director of The David Hume Institute said “The Institute is delighted to welcome Peter Freeman to Edinburgh. His seminar is sponsored by our good friends at the leading UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn. As a member of the Commission (declaration of interest!) I am well aware how important this body and its investigations is to business across the UK and indeed to consumers. The Commission not only assesses mergers, where risks to competition are perceived, but also looks carefully at a range of key economic sectors. It is a rare opportunity to have the Commission’s chair in Scotland, addressing how the Commission matters to Scotland.
In this seminar, Peter Freeman will outline how the Competition Commission contributes to UK competition law and policy and will discuss the general approach to tackling competition problems, with much reference to Scottish cases and issues, which will include non-merger aspects”.
John Schmidt of Shepherd and Wedderburn said: "Shepherd and Wedderburn is delighted to help organise and support this event. Given the importance of competition law in all parts of the UK and most, if not all, industries, it will be particularly interesting to hear Peter Freeman's take on current developments outwith the confines of ongoing cases."
