Shepherd and Wedderburn funds University scholarship
UK law firm Shepherd and Wedderburn has funded the first corporate Tercentenary Scholarship for the University of Edinburgh School of Law. The £25,000 endowed scholarship will provide a law student with the sum of £1,000 a year to help offset the expenses of studying.
The Law Tercentenary Campaign marks the 300th anniversary of the first Chair in Law at Edinburgh and is part of the recently launched University of Edinburgh Campaign. The University aims to raise £4.1 million to fund Tercentenary Scholarships and Bursaries as well as a chair in Medical Jurisprudence, teaching fellowships, investment in the Law Library and a purpose built moot court facility.
Patrick Andrews, Chief Executive of Shepherd and Wedderburn, said: “For many years Shepherd and Wedderburn has offered traineeships to law graduates from the University of Edinburgh, a significant number of whom have gone on to become leading members of our profession. We are delighted to be able to help future generations of students study for a law degree at the University of Edinburgh and achieve their potential through the new Undergraduate Scholarships.”
Georgie McBride, the first student to receive the scholarship, has just begun her first year in the School of Law. Originally from Haddington, the ex-Knox Academy pupil said: “When I first received my offer of acceptance to study Law at the University of Edinburgh, I was thrilled and excited about moving into the capital to study but was worried about the financial burden of doing a Law degree. The scholarship has allowed me to fully enjoy my time studying. It has enabled me to purchase all the books that I need for my degree as well as helping with the cost of staying at Pollock Halls, as my loan did not cover the full cost.”
Vice Principal for Development Young P. Dawkins III, who has masterminded the University of Edinburgh Campaign, says: “Scholarships are at the heart of the Campaign so we’re particularly pleased that Shepherd and Wedderburn has chosen to support the University of Edinburgh Law Tercentenary Appeal in this way. In joining forces with other supporters of the Tercentenary they are strengthening the School of Law overall and investing in the future of law in Scotland.”
