MP calls for reassurance that British Energy will stay in Scotland
An East Kilbride MP has called on the government to ensure that British Energy will not pull out of the region should it its expected takeover go ahead.
Coming as EDF and Centrica are reportedly in the process of tying up a £9 billion deal for the energy supplier, Adam Ingram MP has voiced his concerns that the development could bring into question the future of its sites at Hunterson B in Ayrshire and Torness in East Lothian.
At present the government holds a 36 per cent share in the energy supplier, which is set to play a major role in the next generation of UK nuclear energy sector, with any future development partly dependant on its acquiring new sites.
Mr Ingram commented: "I will be seeking assurances from the Government that any future owner will retain their presence within East Kilbride and Scotland.
"That was the very firm commitment made during the time of the provisions of the nuclear industry in the UK and I am calling for the Government to honour that commitment.
"It would be good if the Scottish National Party administration in Holyrood would support that call."
