New immigration rules in force on 27 November

Employers are reminded that tiers 2 and 5 of the points-based immigration system come into force on 27 November 2008.

Consultation on the national minimum wage and tips

DBERR has announced a consultation to review the current ways in which tips are used in payment of the national minimum wage. It plans the change to the law so that tips, gratuities and service charges can no longer be taken into account when deciding if a worker has received the national minimum wage. The consultation closes on 16 February 2009.

New mediation guide published

ACAS and the CIPD have recently produced a new publication, Mediation: an employer's guide. Employers may find this guide useful particularly in light of the fact that the new ACAS Code of Practice and the ACAS guidance both emphasise that employers and employees should seek to resolve disciplinary and grievance issues in the workplace and where this is not possible should consider using mediation to resolve the problem.
