Regulatory Enforcement and Sanctions Act 2008 receives Royal Assent
The Regulatory Enforcement and Sanctions Act 2008 received Royal Assent on 21 July 2008. It forms part of the Government's better regulation agenda, and is designed to modernise and improve regulatory enforcement, primarily by creating new sanctioning powers for regulators. Under the Act, ministers may confer powers on certain regulators to impose new civil sanctions. The new sanctions include the power to accept enforcement proceedings and to impose fixed monetary penalties and stop notices. Please see articles in previous editions of this bulletin (December 2007 and May 2008) for more information about the contents of the Act.
