Scottish government commissions marine energy plan

The Scottish government has commissioned a new marine energy plan which will map out the power-generating potential of the waters around Scotland.

Environment secretary Richard Lochhead said 2009 will be an exciting time for the development of renewables in the country.

He said the Marine Spatial Plan will detail the environmental challenges and the commercial opportunities open to developers in the Pentland Firth and sea around Orkney and will act as a planning tool.

Mr Lochhead insisted that worldwide interest in Scotland's marine renewables potential is likely to continue and said mapping it out is important in order to make the most of it.

"In 2009 and beyond, Scotland is set to be at the forefront of the global development of clean, green energy technologies," he remarked.

A study published recently by PricewaterhouseCoopers concluded that Scotland could miss out on the opportunities presented by nuclear energy because of its government's opposition to the building of new nuclear plants, the Times reports.
