Redundancy advice enquiries on the increase

Citizens Advice has said that since April this year, it has seen a significant increase in the number of people coming to it for advice about redundancy.

In the last eight months, daily enquiries relating to redundancy have risen from 200 to 425 - an increase of 125%, the national charity said.

During the same period, there has also been a 66% increase in the number of people seeking advice on claiming Jobseekers Allowance.

Citizens Advice chief executive David Harker said: "Rarely a day goes by without reports of yet another company announcing job cuts."

He said it is therefore important that employees know their rights and are able to access free advice in the event of losing their job.

The publication of Citizens Advice's figures comes as official statistics show that unemployment hit 1.86 million in October.

This is the highest figure for more than a decade and coincides with a large drop in the number of job vacancies available.
