Case Study: Sainsbury's Supermarkets Limited

penShepherd and Wedderburn acts exclusively for Sainsbury's Supermarkets Limited in Scotland. Growth in this region, given historic under representation, is a key component of Sainsbury's drive for extra space across the UK and our involvement has been key to the store delivery programme.

We have supported an ambitious extension plan to significantly expand floor space including extensions to Sainsbury's existing estate as well as a significant increase in new main stores and convenience stores. In 2010 alone we exchanged unconditional contracts for main store sites of approximately 280,000 sq ft.

Further conditional contracts have been signed up in the last year amounting to approximately 400,000 sq ft of space - with a similar amount currently under negotiation.  In addition our property team dealt with the extension of three stores in 2010 delivering another 85,000 sq ft of new space and we exchanged contracts on 14 new convenience stores.

The work has been supported throughout with specialist input from our planning, construction and licensing teams (and in particular from our planning specialists who won a significant public enquiry for Sainsbury's key flagship main store development in Nairn).
